Jacques Branellec, co-founder and group president of Jewelmer, famously introduced golden South Sea and Tahitian pearls to the market. Today, he advocates sustainable business practices critical to the longevity and success of the pearl sector.
Jacques Branellec, co-founder and group president of Philippines-based pearl specialist Jewelmer, is a pillar of innovation in pearl farming and jewellery manufacturing. His legacy is forever entwined with the golden South Sea pearl – the gem that he dedicated his life’s work to perfecting in harmony with nature. His journey began in French Polynesia in the 1970s, where he cultivated Tahitian pearls. Fate eventually led him to Palawan, Philippines, where he pioneered the cultivation of golden South Sea pearls.
In 1979, he co-founded Jewelmer with Filipino entrepreneur Manuel Cojuangco, and a decade later, the company produced its first golden pearl, which became the centrepiece of Jewelmer’s refined collections and the National Gem of the Philippines.
Branellec’s business acumen and extensive industry knowledge propelled Jewelmer to lofty heights over the years, with the company gaining significant global following due to its distinctive appeal as a pearl enterprise born from the meeting of two cultures.
Branellec noted, “We pay homage to the elegance of French design and Filipino craftsmanship. Our diverse team of talented individuals contribute their time and talents to create something that is not just extraordinary, but a source of pride for the Philippines.”
His work goes beyond promoting the beauty of the golden South Sea pearl. A marine rescue and environmental conservation advocate, he serves as Rear Admiral in the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary where he promotes education on the impact of climate change.
Branellec vows to ensure that golden South Sea pearls are seen as symbols of splendour and sustainable luxury. “The beauty of the place is inextricably linked to the beauty of the pearl,” he remarked.
