From ultra-feminine pinks to subtle greens and brilliant yellows and blues, fancy colour diamonds continue to fascinate traders and connoisseurs around the world. Prices are on the upswing and buyers are increasingly investing in them as evidenced by top-performing fancy colour diamonds in auctions.
Sotheby’s recently sold a fancy vivid blue and pink diamond ring for HK$35 million (around US$4.5 million) and a fancy intense green and white diamond ring for HK$23.77 million (around US$3.05 million) at the 2021 Magnificent Jewels Autumn Sales in Hong Kong.
According to the auction house, fancy colour diamonds “continue to be in hot demand.”
Fancy colour diamonds were also fast movers at Christie’s auctions. The Dancing Sun, a fancy intense yellow diamond of 204.36 carats, achieved US$4.95 million at Christie’s New York in June this year. In May, the auction house broke records when it sold the 15.81-carat Sakura purple-pink flawless diamond for HK$226.3 million or US$29.3 million.
Prices of fancy colour diamonds meanwhile are on the rise, increasing by 0.2 per cent across all categories in the second quarter of 2021 as supply remained tight, the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF) reported.
FCRF data showed that blue and pink diamond prices inched up 0.4 per cent and 0.3 per cent, respectively. Prices of yellow diamonds meanwhile rose 0.1 per cent from a slight decrease in the previous quarter.
