Russian miner Alrosa recently uncovered a 236-carat diamond bearing an intense yellow-brown hue – the largest natural colour rough ever found in Russia.

The diamond, with dimensions of 47mm by 24mm by 22mm, was extracted from the Ebelyakh mine in Yakutia, Russia. It is estimated to be 120 to 230 million years old.

“Such a large natural colour rough is a unique discovery. Cutters in any country will be interested in such a diamond as it has the potential to give several high-quality polished diamonds,” said Pavel Vinikhin, head of Diamonds at Alrosa’s cutting and polishing division.

The stone is now at the United Selling Organization of Alrosa for evaluation. The company will decide whether to give it to its manufacturers for cutting or to sell it as a rough. 

Operated by Almazy Anabara, a subsidiary of Alrosa, the Ebelyakh mine is located on the Anabar River of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). In the summer of 2017, the mine produced three unique diamonds: Intense yellow, pink and purple-pink fancy colour stones within a month. All three were cut by Alrosa and presented as polished diamonds to the market.
