Lucapa Diamond Company Ltd recently recovered a 104-carat white diamond from the Lulo mine in Angola, a few weeks after finding a large, gem-quality rough from the same location.
“The recovery of this second 100-plus-carat diamond from mining block 46 so soon after the 113-carat D-colour white stone indicates the potential for these blocks as we move deeper into the southern terraces,” noted Stephen Wetherall, managing director of Lucapa. “In addition, the proximity of mining block 46 to the high-priority kimberlites in the Canguige catchment further reinforces their prospectivity.”
Lucapa operates the Lulo alluvial mine in Angola and the Mothae kimberlite resource in Lesotho. Both mines have produced large and high-value diamonds, with more than 75 per cent of revenues generated from the recovery of 4.8-plus-carat stones. According to the miner, Lulo has produced 18 100-plus-carat diamonds to date.
