Coloured gemstone royalties emerald, ruby and sapphire continue to reign supreme in the international trade, thanks to their value, rarity and timeless beauty.

Whether it is the mesmerising green of an emerald or the fiery red of a ruby and the captivating blue of a sapphire, the so-called “Big Three” in the coloured gemstone universe are highly celebrated and sought after in the jewellery industry. Solid market demand is evident in international auctions.

Ruby and emerald took centre stage at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York on December 6, 2023. One of the top lots was a 7.31-carat Burmese ruby and diamond ring, which fetched US$1.13 million. 

A ring adorned with a 9.13-carat emerald-cut Colombian emerald in 18-karat gold, meanwhile, sold for US$1 million, exceeding a projected value of US$200,000 to US$300,000.

At Bonhams’ New York Jewels auction held on December 4, 2023, an 11.87-carat loose Burmese sapphire fetched US$660,900, more than three times its pre-sale estimate. 

These highly coveted gemstones have time and again proven their inimitable allure, offering potential for both personal indulgence and financial growth. Their rarity, enduring charm, soaring value, and historical significance contribute to their desirability among collectors and investors alike.
