SHOW DAILY by JNA • 1 SHOW DAILY 6Day 23 September 2023 | Saturday Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong 18-22 September 2023 | AWE 20-24 September 2023 | HKCEC The World’s Number One Fine Jewellery Event Successful convergence of jewellery and gem industry at JGW 2023 Industry stakeholders are pointing to steady business at Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong (JGW), with many exhibitors excitedly showcasing their latest collections, products and services to professional trade buyers. According to Damien Cody, president of the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) and executive director of Cody Opal Australia Pty Ltd, buyers were keen on sourcing gemstones at AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE). JGW’s jewellery materials section concluded yesterday, September 22. “Looking at the first three days at AWE, the crowds were very good,” noted Cody. “There was obviously a lot of pent-up demand from customers looking to buy. They are looking to source their coloured gemstones.” Cody added that transactions are expected to pick up as company inventories will need to be filled eventually. “You can sense that from the people on the floor. They are desperate to fill their inventories and to supply that demand,” the ICA official said. Testament to the trade’s readiness to jumpstart the industry is the fact that companies are continuously innovating their product offerings to meet evolving consumer preferences. Rare Gems Co Ltd is showcasing an array of exquisite ruby and emerald jewellery pieces at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. Among its standout pieces is a necklace with two Colombian emeralds weighing a total of 86.61 carats. The necklace is valued at US$425,000. The company’s design consultant Bela Badhalia said, “The market has shown keen interest in our designs and the magnificent large stones they feature. Our clients, mainly from Taiwan, China and other Asian countries, see our creations as investment pieces.” Meanwhile, Chung Yuk Sheung, chairman of the Hong Kong Gemstone Manufacturer’s Association (HKJJA), said jewellers should sharpen their focus on the mainland Chinese market to support longterm growth. Esther Oberbeck, senior vice president of Strategy Development at De Beers Group, also noted that the romantic love gifting market in China had yet to be fully tapped, presenting vast opportunities for the diamond jewellery market.
