SHOW DAILY by JNA • 1 Hong Kong reinforces status as jewellery trading hub Leaders of Hong Kong gem and jewellery trade associations cited the city’s tax-free status, resilience and innovative nature as key to maintaining business stability amid challenging business conditions. Speaking at the Jewellery & Gem ASIA Hong Kong (JGA) Media Gathering on June 19, they said that industry players in the city are championing innovation to navigate headwinds stemming from US tariffs, market slowdowns and geopolitical tensions. Victor Yiu, chairman of the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China (DFHK), noted that companies are diversifying their customer bases and exploring different platforms and channels to sustain growth. He said, “While the US is a major market for Hong Kong, we can tap other regions such as the Middle East, where demand remains strong for diamonds and jewellery.” Victor Chan, chairman of the Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association (HKJJA), pointed to growing opportunities in Southeast Asia, while DFHK Founding President Lawrence Ma noted the need for product, market and channel innovation. Trade leaders also underscored Hong Kong’s continued importance as a jewellery trading hub. “Hong Kong is still a free port, so we encourage all buyers and exhibitors to use the city as a platform to do business,” Yiu said. “Informa Markets’ shows in June and September provide an excellent platform for business growth.” Ma cited Hong Kong’s resilience, adaptability and propensity for innovation as the foundations of its success as a thriving jewellery hub. Hong Kong’s tax-free status also makes it a great platform for trade, he added. “The global industry has been concerned because the business cycle is different from the way things have been in the last six decades – periods of boom followed by periods of setbacks,” Ma explained. “But things are getting back to normal – not how it was before but the normalcy that we create through collaboration and innovation.” Ma said he expected matters to settle by yearend and improve over the next few years. “I remain positive and am certain we will have more good stories to share by September,” he said. Show Daily: How was business for Paspaley in 2024? Peter Bracher: The increase in demand and prices in 2023 was unprecedented in my 25-year career. After such a strong run, we were not surprised that prices for some categories declined in the first quarter of 2024. However, demand for all categories remained strong and from March 2024 onwards, prices stabilised and then gradually increased over the course of the year. This stability continued through the first quarter of 2025 despite concerns about tariffs and talks of a trade war. Overall, business has been good from 2024 onward. Show Daily: How about your wholesale business in the US? Bracher: Paspaley has been distributing wholesale pearls in the US for around 40 years. In early 2024, we began distributing our Paspaley branded jewellery through wholesale retailers. Currently, we have four partners across five doors carrying some of our signature collections. Our Lavalier Collection has been particularly well received. It was always our plan to take things slowly in the US and be selective with our retail partners. We want to ensure that the relationship is a good fit for both parties and that we maintain the service and quality levels we are known for in Australia. Show Daily: Given heightened uncertainties, what is your outlook for the year? Bracher: Production is stable, and demand remains high. From all accounts, the auctions held in Hong Kong in March all performed better than expected, which is encouraging considering the uncertainty around international trade at that time. There are still concerns about the impacts the tariffs will have on the world economy but, at this stage, I remain hopeful that market stability will continue. Show Daily: What can we expect from Paspaley moving forward? Bracher: We will open our first flagship store in Adelaide and a new store in Melbourne during 2025. Our Perth flagship store is currently under construction and will open in the first half of 2026. We are also planning a complete refurbishment of our Sydney flagship store commencing in early 2026 with completion around mid-year.

Established in 2011, the vertically integrated company also offers customisation services. The pearl sector has once again demonstrated its remarkable resilience, navigating recent global challenges with strength and adaptability. Leading the charge are top-quality golden South Sea pearls. Growth was evident in Asia – a region that cherishes craftsmanship and heritage and where affluence is growing, according to Jewelmer CEO Jacques Christophe Branellec. Further shaping buying decisions, especially for Jewelmer’s clientele, is a rising preference for ethically sourced and sustainably produced pearls alongside influencer marketing that strongly appeals to aspirational consumers. “Luxury today is defined by experiences, and by investing in thoughtfully curated moments and collaborating with like-minded brands beyond the jewellery space, Jewelmer is creating unique experiences that resonate with a wider audience, expanding our market reach and brand visibility,” explained Branellec. Pearls of opportunity Cultivating a broader base of more sophisticated and discerning clients could support long-term stability for Jewelmer amid ongoing global shifts, including evolving trade policies such as US tariffs and changes in the international landscape. “While tariffs pose challenges to the pearl sector, businesses that remain adaptable and responsive can find ways to navigate the landscape and identify potential opportunities,” noted Branellec. The company aims to reinforce its presence in more resilient markets and focus on value creation to stay on the growth path. Case in point is Southeast Asia, which presents a golden opportunity for the pearl sector, shared Branellec. Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, for instance, are all emerging economies seeking both quality and meaningful luxury purchases. Meanwhile, e-commerce, personalisation and localised social media content could further bolster brand recognition and customer engagement while storytelling and partnerships are key to transforming “awareness into desire,” the Jewelmer official said. Renowned for its comprehensive sustainability agenda, Jewelmer sees sustainability as not just a responsibility but a competitive advantage. Its commitment to responsible pearl farming and community livelihood development is its defining factor, shaping its identity and future. “We have seen significant potential for growth in 2025. These are driven by digital initiatives, sustainability and market opportunities,” remarked Branellec. “Jewelmer remains optimistic about the future while acknowledging the need to strategically address economic and competitive challenges to support our ongoing successes.” All pearls from Jewelmer Sample ring mounting in 18-karat gold with diamonds and coloured gemstones by Shenzhen Jindingsheng Jewelry Co Ltd Chinese tradition and modernity Golden opportunities in South Sea pearls
