They come in many varieties – round and flawless, exceptional baroques or sophisticated strands – and constantly figure in jewellery designers’ most celebrated creations. Over the years, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has introduced various initiatives aimed at modernising pearl identification techniques in the trade. Its 7 Pearl Value Factors™ – established over 70 years of ground-breaking research on pearls – provide a systematic way to evaluate nacreous pearls and describe their quality in a more coherent way. In addition to its Pearl Identification Report and Pearl Identification and Classification Report, the institute also unveiled a Cultured Pearl Classification Report this year based on the GIA 7 Pearl Value Factors™ to provide a more efficient evaluation method for cultured pearls. The GIA Cultured Pearl Classification Report is an abbreviated report that provides classification information on unmodified cultured pearls. This dossier-sized report includes a detailed classification of the pearl based on the GIA 7 Pearl Value Factors™ as well as a digital image of the submitted item.
