Instead of spending a million dollars in one go, they will spend US$200,000 now and US$200,000 next month to hedge against price fluctuations and manage their finances sensibly.” Younger consumers in the region, known for their high discretionary income, also offer significant growth opportunities. Vainio noted that this demographic examines the sustainability credentials, emotional value and versatility of jewellery pieces when making purchases. Tawhid Abdulla, CEO of Jawhara Jewellery and chairman of the Dubai Jewellery Group, meanwhile pointed to a growing penchant for jewellery gifting among younger generations of consumers. “The culture and tradition of jewellery is still strong in the region. Younger consumers, however, want their jewellery to reflect their personality, which creates room for bespoke pieces as well as innovative and creative designs. This is where homegrown and designer brands can thrive,” he explained. Shining possibilities Prospects are bright too for diamonds in the Middle East, with many Gulf nationals favouring fine jewellery with natural diamonds. Priyal Shankar, director (Brand and Tech) of Indian diamond manufacturer Shivam Jewels, named the Middle East as the next big market for diamonds. "This is where the opportunity lies. The Middle East is experiencing a wave of wealth transfer. Here, diamonds over 1 carat do very well. A broad spectrum of sizes works in Dubai. In the Gulf, demand is strong for diamonds of 3 carats and up, notably from high-end brands such as Graff and Moussaief. The region gravitates towards VVS and VS diamonds in JKL colour," he revealed. Dubai-based Evara Diamonds, which specialises in larger diamonds and fancy colours, is equally optimistic. “India is now our top market, but the Middle East is becoming a close second. The purchasing power here is extraordinary. Buyers rarely hesitate when they come across something they like. This region is becoming very important to diamond dealers,” said Shashank Kothari, managing director of Evara Diamonds. Diamond jewellery retail brand La Marquise attests to the Middle East’s fondness for diamonds. The company, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, is innovating to stay ahead of the curve. It invested in cutting-edge machinery to enter new product segments and opened in strategic upscale locations such as the Four Seasons Doha and The Galleria Al Maryah Island Mall in Abu Dhabi to tap premium clients. “The increase in gold prices and the decrease in diamond prices prompted us to sell more higher-end, expensive pieces,” shared La Marquise CEO Nishit Shah. “Since we are one of the few brands focused solely on diamond jewellery, we aim to create demand in our customers’ minds through storytelling and emotional connections.” Apart from its designs that marry modern and traditional elements, Shah also builds brand appeal through celebrity endorsements, social media campaigns and influencer collaborations. He said, “Our strategy is to deliver what the market wants while balancing creativity and profitability.” Jewellery boutiques in Dubai Mall 迪拜购物中心的珠宝精品店
