In 2022, India topped global export tallies for cut and polished diamonds, silver jewellery, and synthetic diamonds and stones, according to the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). That year, the Indian diamond sector accounted for 26.5 per cent of world exports, with values reaching US$86.75 billion. As consumer preferences evolve, India’s diamond and jewellery industry is undergoing a critical transformation. According to GJEPC, companies are increasingly embracing responsible practices by prioritising ethical sourcing and sustainable processes throughout the supply chain. By procuring diamonds from conflict-free zones and placing great importance on environmental and social protection, Indian enterprises cater effectively to more conscientious consumers and establish themselves as reliable and trustworthy partners in the global market. Industry players are likewise shaping the future through innovation. Investing heavily in cutting-edge technology and design processes, Indian companies consistently create exquisite diamond jewellery that blends contemporary taste with India's rich heritage. A hallmark of excellence The 50th India Gem and Jewellery Awards (IGJA), organised by GJEPC, was a testament to India’s formidable leadership in the international jewellery trade. A total of 24 accolades were presented at the awards ceremony that took place on March 30, 2024 in Mumbai to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Indian diamond and jewellery companies. Categories included Cut & Polished Diamond Exports, Most Socially Responsible Company, Woman Entrepreneur of the Year and Highest Employment on the Company Rolls.
