In 2007, the French Polynesian government authorised Cheng to establish the Tahitian Pearl Association Hong Kong (TPAHK) and subsequently appointed him association president. With him at the helm, the group vigorously promoted Tahitian pearls, successfully raising their profile in Hong Kong and the Asia Pacific. Through such initiatives, TPAHK helped strengthen demand for Tahitian pearls and further expand their market share. As a result, Hong Kong is now the top export region for Tahitian pearls since 2010. TPAHK also provides industry stakeholders with a platform for networking, business and collaboration through various events. Cheng’s unparalleled leadership and dedication are deeply ingrained in his psyche. He worked his way to success – from a tailor to watch salesman, shop owner, and eventually, the driving force behind one of Hong Kong’s most prominent pearl companies. He founded Rio Pearl in 1983, transitioning from freshwater pearl cultivation to South Sea pearl production. The company has become one of the largest pearl producers in the world, just 13 years since commencing pearl farming operations in the Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar. “If you decide to do something, be patient and do it well,” shared Cheng. “It is the same with pearls. If you want to be a producer, aim to be the best.
