MARKET INTELLIGENCE 市场情报 42 | JNA November/December 2023 Business was better-than-anticipated at this year’s Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong (JGW), with several exhibitors pointing to steady traffic and quality buyers at the seven-day fair, which wrapped up on September 24. The 40th JGW also set records as the city’s first event since the Covid-19 pandemic to witness the full resurgence of international participation. The fair featured 3,422 exhibitors from 44 countries and regions and attracted 53,879 buyers from 142 countries and regions, which was on a par with 2018 figures. Some major Asian markets saw a notable increase in visitor numbers, including Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Attendance from Europe and the Americas were below 2018 numbers, partly due to the ongoing recovery of airline capacity that has yet to be fully restored, according to show organiser Informa Markets Jewellery. Meanwhile, exhibitors interviewed by JNA said they touched base with existing clients and acquired new potential customers as market demand continued to gain traction in time for the holidays. Others cited slower conversion of enquiries to sales transactions, but this is temporary, according to Damien Cody, president of the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) and executive director of Cody Opal Australia Pty Ltd. He said a great deal of pent-up demand from customers looking to source their coloured gemstones fuelled onsite buying activity.
