The company’s sapphire mining journey began in December 2019 when it acquired Capricorn Sapphire and Great Northern Mining in Central Queensland, Australia. These are among the most significant sapphire deposits of late, harkening back to Australia’s glory days in the late 20th century when the country accounted for over 90 per cent of the global sapphire supply. Fura Gems also recently encountered large deposits of pink sapphires in its Mozambican mines, historically unexplored until now for these much-in-demand gemstones. Furthering its vision to structure and rebuild the largely unorganised global sapphire gemstone industry, the miner is already at an advanced exploration stage for sapphires in Madagascar. Single platform With its three sapphire mines, Fura Gems is currently the single largest supplier of sapphires globally, providing the market with the gem in a wide range of colours including pink, teal, blue, green, parti and yellow. The miner enables the industry to source for different colours of sapphires from a single platform. It has so far held four successful sapphire auctions in Bangkok, achieving expected prices for its quality roughs. These ambitious full-ownership acquisitions and subsequent fast turnarounds, followed by large-scale productions and auctions, are a precursor to a new era of sapphires backed by a level playing field and a promise of transparency and traceability of origin for the trade.
