In the first two months of 2022, the country’s gem and jewellery exports doubled over the same period last year to reach US$2.07 billion, according to data from Global Trade Atlas compiled by the GIT (The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand) Information Center. While encouraging, this was still lower than the pre-pandemic results of US$2.18 billion in 2019 and US$3.74 billion in 2020. Jewellery exports in January-February 2022 grew 26.38 per cent year on year to US$544.7 million. Recovery actually began in 2021, with full-year jewellery exports amounting to US$3.37 billion compared to US$2.62 billion in 2020 and US$3.69 billion in 2019. Silver jewellery exports, one of Thailand’s main gem and jewellery categories, also returned to growth last year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels at US$1.716 billion, compared to US$1.4 billion in 2020 and US$1.55 billion in 2019.
