36 | JNA July/August 2022 DESIGN The pendant series is made of 18-karat gold and set with five melee stones to symbolise the elements: Diamond for metal, tsavorite for wood, ruby for fire, blue sapphire for water and orange sapphire for earth. Based on an “interchangeable adornment” concept, majority of the designs in Gao's Five Elements series feature interchangeable core discs, allowing the wearer to demonstrate his or her versatility by mixing and matching pieces for everyday wear. Gao's product portfolio ranges from very high-end customised jewellery to fashionable mass production pieces in order to accommodate the varying preferences of her clientele. “Creating personalised jewellery at affordable prices is my personal goal,” she noted. “People can choose multiple jewellery pieces with their desired 'element' at the same time or replace them at any time, so they can imbibe the energy of the Five Elements, influence the magnetic field around them and attract good luck.” In 2020, Gao launched her award-winning Tai Chi jewellery suite, which consists of a necklace, bracelet, ring, pin and earrings. The pieces come in 9-karat gold and are adorned with jadeite, and further accentuated by several metal finishing techniques. The Yin Yang Fish Tai Chi Diagram, featuring two black and white fish-shaped motifs in a circular pattern, represents a repetition of positive and negative forms in constant movement and change. The diagram shows the interaction between Yin and Yang, denoting interdependence and opposition. The pair, one positive and one negative, forms a vivid and beautifully auspicious pattern. The Tai Chi diagram is symmetrical in its rotation around the centre of the circle, creating a form of movement that has no beginning and no end, and that repeats itself over and over again, expressing the idea of eternal life and change. I try to explain Chinese philosophy in an understandable design language with traditional Chinese cultural elements. I hope to leverage my collection to promote cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world,” concluded Gao. All jewellery pieces by Gao Qianqian 所有珠宝作品由高倩倩设计
