Platinum prices today have fallen below those of gold by half – a development that is expected to bode well for platinum jewellery. With prices on the downswing, platinum could be the next big opportunity in the jewellery business. The significant role of PGI China With a mandate of fostering dazzling business opportunities for platinum in the China market, the Platinum Guild International is committing more resources to platinum product development and innovation. First and foremost, PGI will address major obstacles and challenges that hinder platinum production, including porosity, alloys and hardness. This year, the group worked extensively on testing a new alloy by adding gallium to the common 950PtCu and the internationally recognised 950PtRu. Gallium, a metal that has a low melting point of 29.7 degrees Celsius, can significantly reduce the melting point of 950 platinum composites to allow easier casting. Results showed that the addition of gallium effectively reduces porosity in 950PtRu. The frequent porosity in PtRu alloy in casting is inevitable due to Ruthenium’s high melting point and rapid solidification. Although big companies swear by this alloy, it has had very little success in China, especially in the past few years where CNC was predominantly used to produce jewellery.
