JNA Mar/Apr 2020 | 37 Eran Zini, managing director of the Israel Diamond Exchange Jewellery sales were up 1.8 per cent, with online sales rising 8.8 percent, the data further showed. Diamond companies stand to benefit from improving economic conditions and consumer sentiment in the US, which are instrumental in sustaining global growth. Reinstating political stability in Hong Kong after months of disruptive anti-China protests could likewise further strengthen the market, noted Zini. “Our forecast for the diamond business in 2020 is a continuing trend toward recovery,” he stated. “We expect to see an improvement from the beginning of the year and actual growth in the second quarter of 2020.” The US, as Israel’s largest export market, will continue to fuel demand in the diamond sector, he added. Technology Technological advancements continue to play a crucial role in the development of any business, the diamond sector included. Israel, for instance, is known as the “start-up nation,” because of the many technological innovations it earlier introduced, which include among others the use of lasers in cutting diamonds and computerised rough planning systems. According to Zini, the IDE established the Diamond Tech Innovation Center where it hosts start-ups from various fields related to the diamond industry. IDE has also partnered with global ecommerce leaders such as Amazon, eBay, Alibaba and James Allen to sell diamonds through their online platforms. “We encourage our members to invest in technology in their businesses and to engage with ecommerce players. We also offer courses on how to best take advantage of these new platforms,” he added. Amid challenges, the Israel diamond industry remains resilient owing to its long history as a global diamond hub, noted Zini. “Our industry has seen many downturns, but we have always been able to recover and reach new heights. Our members are flexible and can adapt quickly to new conditions. This trait, characteristic to the Israeli culture, is critical to success in the diamond business,” he continued.
