According to Eran Zini, managing director of the Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE), this market revival could signal continued progress. Stronger demand for rough and polished diamonds during the holiday season last year, particularly in major markets such as the US, likewise hints at a more upbeat outlook for the global diamond sector. Retail sales were also on the upswing. Data from Mastercard SpendingPulse TM , which tracks online and in-store spending using all types of payment, revealed that holiday retail sales in 2019 rose 3.4 per cent, with online sales growing 18.8 per cent compared to 2018.
