MARKET INTELLIGENCE PEARL REPORT | 46 | 2022-2023 Leveraging value provenance for pearls 利用原产地信息提升珍珠价值 Two Australian industry trailblazers have partnered to create a new digital platform that tracks the origin of pearls using state-of-the-art blockchain technology. 两位澳大利亚行业先躯携手创建了一个崭新的 数字平台,该平台使用最先进的区块链技术追踪珍珠来源。 Pearls – natural or cultured South Sea, Akoya, Tahitian and freshwater – come from diverse sources such as Australia, China, Fiji, Indonesia, Mexico, Tahiti, the Gulf, the Philippines, Vietnam and the US. It takes years for pearls, the only gems produced by a living organism, to form and grow. According to the Gemological Institute of America, pearl formation occurs when a foreign body becomes lodged inside the mollusc’s mantle. The mollusc then forms a sac surrounding the irritant and then secretes nacre around it. Every process that a mollusc goes through is recorded – embedded within the layers of nacre, which is the calcium carbonate compound of the pearl that is being formed. The unique components of each pearl – colour, shape, size, surface and lustre – reflect this organic and magnificent journey. This is rarely explained to the public unless one gets a chance to visit a pearl farm and witness first-hand how a farm operates, and the passion and dedication that farmers are putting into pearl production. There is also the positive impact of pearl cultivation, from community engagement to protection and preservation of marine resources, biodiversity as well as pollution mitigation. on Pearl strands 珍珠串 | Pierre Fallourd |
