PEARL REPORT | 36 | 2022-2023 PERSPECTIVE For years, Fukui Shell Nucleus Factory has been presenting a unique narrative of the pearl by placing it at the centre of an “ecotourism experience.” Visitors at its pearl farm can witness firsthand how pearls are cultivated through pearl workshops at sea. To cap the session, participants can make their own pearl jewellery. David Wong, project director at Fukui, said this oneof-a-kind activity attracts diversified audiences, including couples, friends and families. What started out as a pandemic pastime has since become a tool to help revive Hong Kong’s aquacultural industry and educate new generations, revealed Wong. Consumers are also inching closer to the source – the pearl cultivators – more than ever, thanks to digitalisation. Pearlers meanwhile are using this opportunity to promote sustainability. “Covid-19 has triggered a global reflection on the pearl industry’s value chain. From a sales perspective, a company’s resiliency hinges on its digital capabilities to sustain the business,” noted Wong. “Consumers are also more interested in sustainability. They make informed buying decisions, knowing they are helping to protect nature by purchasing sustainable pearls.” A deeper understanding of pearls can also bolster demand. Modern buyers, young people especially, have a newfound appreciation for pearls and ethical practices, helped in part by Fukui’s pearl ecotourism initiative that promotes Hong Kong’s pearl heritage. Fukui also started developing pearl by-products such as pearl meat and pearl powder, which have so far gained a steady following in the market.
