JWA 2021 Jewellery Industry Best Practices
Chu likewise adopted an agilemanagement approach that would enable Picup to reach both its short-term and long-term goals. “We broke down our long-term goals into two-week ‘sprints,’ wherein we challenge ourselves to hit a new milestone every two weeks,” he says. His decision to implement a flexible work-from-home model, even before the pandemic began, also benefitted the company when COVID-19 struck. “Our employees are used to staying connected in spite of the physical distance. This helped us become more available to our customers who needed help and support in navigating the digital retail landscape,” he shares. INSPIRING COMMUNICATION To strengthen its ties with customers, the company cultivated new channels of communication like Facebook Messenger,LiveChat,WhatsApp and 24/7 e-mail services — all of which were streamlined to yield an average response time of 30 seconds. As a result, Picup’s user base grew to up to 50,000 users on its GemLightbox app line alone. Its website now caters to an average of 25,000 to 30,000 unique visitors per month. More importantly, Chu openly shares the company’s expertise and resources for the betterment of the trade. Picup has partnered with the Responsible Jewelry Transformative in 2020, a non-profit that aids the jewellery industry in achieving sustainable development goals. “Together, we provide jewellery photography solutions directly to miners and jewellers and help them sell their products while empowering African women through the non-profit’s Virtu Gem platform,” shares Chu. Recently, he also opened the doors of Picup Media Academy, which was designed to be an educational resource hub for the jewellery community. Through it all, Chu remains committed to leading his team and making invaluable contributions to the industry. “In navigating through uncertainties, I have learned to further embrace the importance of cultivating the right culture and strengthening our core values, both of which guide our team towards success,” says Chu. 1.
