58 | Jewellery World Awards 2021 Gübelin Gem Lab CATEGORY: Guided by almost a century’s worth of data, Gübelin Gem Lab expertly evaluates coloured gemstones, diamonds and pearls that are being sold by hundreds of companies from around the world. More recently, the organisation developed an eponymous rating system that aims to standardise the way gemstones are being assessed across the industry. “Our laboratory spearheads innovations and technological developments to help gain and maintain the trust of consumers and foster healthy business relationships,” says Daniel Nyfeler, Managing Director of Gübelin Gem Lab, which was established in 1923. Gübelin operates in Lucerne, Hong Kong and New York, and is supported by 19 shuttle destinations all over the world. Aside from assessing the quality of some of the world’s most valuable gemstones, this Jewellery World Awards Honouree also traces a gemstone’s history and origin – where possible – to ensure that its supply chain is traceable and trackable. Testament to this is the Emerald Paternity Test, which made Gübelin a Recipient of the 2017 JNA Awards, JWA’s forerunner, as well as the Provenance Proof Blockchain – both of which were developed by the lab, and currently used by more than 500 companies. GÜBELIN POINTS To ensure that gems are evaluated against facts and not mere opinions, the laboratory developed the Gübelin Rating System.
