JNA Awards 2020 - Jewellery Industry Best Practices
50 JNA AWARDS • 2020 De Beers Group A respected name in the jewellery industry, the De Beers Group shines at the JNA Awards for its contributions to protecting wildlife, preserving the environment and ensuring the health and welfare of the communities it serves. This sustainability approach is captured by Building Forever – its commitment to creating a positive and lasting legacy, even long after De Beers has recovered its last diamond. The approach focuses on four key areas: Protecting the natural world, standing with women and girls, partnering with thriving communities and leading ethical business practices. ‘Moving Giants’ One such programme that garnered positive attention for this Honouree is Moving Giants, which will bring a total of around 200 elephants to their new home at the end of a 1,700-kilometre journey. In partnership with Peace Parks Foundation (PPF), the group invested US$1.8 million in the longest elephant translocation ever attempted. The project was launched as a result of an overpopulation of elephants at their Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve in South Africa – one of eight located in the 500,000-hectare Diamond Route Network. The massive conservation site is a result of De Beers’ commitment to conserving six acres of land for every acre affected by its mining operations. Aside from quelling the environmental imbalance at the Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve, the migration to Zinave National Park in Mozambique also breathes new life into the latter’s depleted elephant population. A total of 101 elephants have been relocated, which are now able to roam across great distances with sightings of calves in the park for the first time in many years. A further 100 elephants are due to move in the coming years. In addition, through the Anglo American Foundation, the company is allocating US$500,000 to Category: Sustainability Initiative of the Year Country / Region: United Kingdom 1
