Aside from leading the merger, Ma also formulated operating rules and regulations for the federation’s member retailers to ensure that they would always provide high-quality diamond jewellery to customers. Ma shares that this particular milestone was greatly influenced by Sik-wah Leung, the businessman who inspired him to form the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong. He is especially honoured to be following in the footsteps of Leung, who received the Lifetime Achievement accolade from the JNA Awards in 2013. Apart from this, Ma actively campaigned to make Hong Kong’s jewellery exhibition and trade market shine on the international stage. He accomplishes such a task through his works at various Jewellery Advisory Committees. He is also a Director of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Counselor of the Gem and Jewelry Trade Association of China, Vice President of the Shanghai Diamond Exchange Council and a member of the board of governors of the Gemological Institute of America. Various organisations also lauded this gentleman for his continuous and longstanding contributions to the industry. For one, he received the Hong Kong Jewelry Industry’s Outstanding Achievement Award from the Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers’ Association in 2008. In the end, it is Ma’s humility and integrity that make him even more remarkable. “I never aim to be a good leader. I aim to be a helpful friend and always strive to learn from people around me – these are what I value the most,” he says. 1. Lawrence Ma, Chief Executive Officer of Lee Heng Diamond Group 2.
