The Gemmological Science International (GSI) has opened a new laboratory in Bangkok’s gem and jewellery district, expanding its global footprint to 14 locations.
The facility offers a full range of gemmological services, including testing and certification of coloured gemstones, natural and lab-grown diamonds, pearls and finished jewellery. The lab can screen and detect undisclosed lab-grown diamonds and simulants – a capability that GSI said it had developed in response to industry demand for accurate, science-based verification.
Debbie Azar, president of GSI, said the Bangkok lab is a strategic addition to the organisation’s network. “Bangkok has long been a global epicentre for coloured gemstone trading, and it is essential for GSI to have a strong presence here – close to where our clients operate,” said Azar.
She added that GSI’s service scope extends beyond traditional gem testing.
“While many labs in this region focus solely on coloured gemstones, GSI offers a much broader spectrum of services. From our expertise in undisclosed diamond detection and jewellery quality control to our unmatched ability to scale – from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of pieces practically overnight – GSI is uniquely equipped to support large-scale manufacturers and global supply chains,” added Azar.
The Bangkok team is composed of locally trained gemmologists supported by advanced instrumentation, aligning with GSI’s existing operational standards across its global network, the company said.
Founded in New York in 2005, GSI operates laboratories across four continents and provides services to manufacturers and retailers worldwide. The organisation also offers gemmological training programmes and conducts research through its in-house centre.
