Dr. Henry A. Hänni, former director of the Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF) and a pioneer in gemstone research, passed away at his home in Basel on January 9, 2025, at 79.
An expert in pearl and coloured stone analysis, treatment detection and origin determination, Dr. Hänni shaped SSEF’s development and global reputation during his tenure as director from 1990 to 2009.
He also taught at the University of Basel, inspiring generations of gemmologists.
SSEF director Dr. Michael S. Krzemnicki said Dr. Hänni would be remembered not only for his academic achievements but also for his unique sense of curiosity.
“His warm personality and distinctive sense of humour touched all who knew him, making him not just a respected colleague but a beloved friend,” he added.
