Established jewellery artists are sharing valuable insights on their creative process and business strategies at a panel discussion today at the Grand Foyer of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Taking place from 3pm to 4pm, the session, “Staying Ahead in the Evolving World of Jewellery Design,” features Austy Lee, founder and designer of Austy Lee Art Jewellery; Caroline Chartouni, founder and designer of Caroline C; and Nisan Ongwuthitham, founder and designer of Nisan Ong/Ong Jewelry Design Co Ltd.
The panellists will reveal the setbacks they faced when starting their own businesses and how they transformed these into valuable learning experiences. They will also divulge the role branding plays in their success and provide insights on how to develop and promote one’s brand identity effectively. Attendees will likewise learn the practical strategies designers can employ to nurture strong relationships with suppliers, manufacturers and other industry stakeholders.
Lee is renowned for his exceptional workmanship, distinctive design themes and utilisation of rare gemstones. The high-end jewellery designer launched his namesake brand in 2017. Embracing the theme “When Jewellery is Psychedelic Art,” Austy was inspired by psychedelic patterns, drawing influences from religion, new age concepts, graphic design and fashion. His unique style encompasses elements of industrial aesthetics, pop-punk influences, edginess, strictness, boldness, cultural references, contemporary symbolism and vibrant colours.
Chartouni’s education in interior design and fashion design in Paris honed her artistic flair, craftsmanship and deep admiration for the natural beauty of gemstones. Drawing inspiration from her travels, she sources the finest-quality stones to create unique pieces. While she is affectionately referred to as the “Queen of Paraiba” due to her love for the mesmerising neon-blue stone, her enchantment extends to other gems as well, including opals, tanzanites and diamonds, to name a few.
Ongwuthitham is the founder and sole designer of jewellery brand, Nisan, located in Bangkok, Thailand. His profound passion for art and his deep love for the subject ultimately led him into the realm of jewellery design. Nisan personally crafts every collection, engaging in intensive discussions with his creative team prior to producing detailed drawings. With meticulous attention to detail, each piece is handcrafted, ensuring that every diamond and coloured gemstone is carefully selected to achieve the desired contrast and effect.
