As many gem and jewellery companies are family enterprises, succession planning remains a constant concern. In the post-pandemic era though, younger generations are increasingly joining the family business, bringing fresh perspectives to sales and operations.
Several years back, owners of jewellery businesses were hard-pressed to convince their younger family members to join their companies. JNA has witnessed thriving brands, manufacturers and suppliers closing shop after their founders’ retirement as no one in the family wanted to continue the business.
But after Covid-19, sons and daughters, nieces and nephews have been injecting a healthy dose of energy and ideas to keep companies relevant in a fast-paced, digital world that demands agility and innovation.
At Thai jewellery giant Pranda, owner Prida Tiasuwan’s son Jade is looking into omnichannel opportunities for growth. Arjun Dangayach is boosting sales efforts at his father Ashish’s gem and jewellery company Colorjewels in Hong Kong. Prisha Khimavat Surana leads marketing initiatives at Su-Raj Inter Gold while Chonlada Trirotanan and her siblings take on various roles to assist their father Veerasak in his eponymous ruby company Veerasak Gems.
These are but some encouraging examples of succession and continuity in an industry that has long struggled with attracting new blood to join its ranks.
The growing importance of digital and social channels to the industry has made it more attractive to digital natives. And who would know better how to attract millennials and Gen Zs than millennials and Gen Zs themselves?
More importantly, the influx of younger family members in the trade keeps the gem and jewellery community close-knit and flourishing for generations to come.
