Emeralds and rubies were the stars of Phillips’ Hong Kong jewels auction, with the company also recording solid results for jadeite, diamonds and signed pieces.
The auction, held on September 30, achieved a total of HK$42.23 million (around US$5.42 million), with 71 per cent of the 95 lots having been sold. Phillips said nearly half of the lots offered benefited from its “Priority Bidding,” a first-of-its-kind buyer’s premium structure, which rewards early participation with lower rates.
According to Benoît Repellin, global head of Jewellery, and Diana Chang, head of Sale, Hong Kong, Phillips Jewels, the season’s results reaffirm strong demand for exceptional coloured gemstones, with emeralds and rubies leading the sale.
“Collectors continue to pursue these treasures with enthusiasm, underscoring their enduring value and rarity,” they added.
The top lot was a bracelet adorned with 16.09 carats of no-oil Colombian emeralds with diamond accents, which sold for HK$3.16 million (approximately US$406,124). This was followed by a ring with a 7.15-carat no-oil Muzo emerald from Colombia, which fetched HK$2.32 million (about US$298,377); and a necklace with nearly 60 carats of unheated Burmese rubies with diamonds, which raised HK$2.19 million (around US$281,801).
Phillips also achieved strong results for diamonds and fancy colour diamonds, selling 82 per cent of the lots. Jadeite likewise performed impressively, continuing the trend from previous seasons and achieving a 92 per cent sell-through rate, with several lots surpassing their pre-sale estimates.
The sale further highlighted robust market demand for signed pieces, with 90 per cent of the lots offered being snapped up, according to Phillips. Top performers were Cindy Chao’s Ribbon Collection and iconic creations by Cartier, Piaget, Tiffany & Co and Harry Winston.
