Bonhams reported a 22.8 per cent year-on-year increase in global jewellery sales in 2022, making it a record year for the auction house’s jewellery division.
Jewellery auctions generated a total of US$73.98 million, the company said. “This makes 2022 the most successful year for Bonhams global jewellery department to date. Bonhams saw a 42 per cent increase in global registration numbers year-on-year,” shared Bonhams Global Head of Jewellery Jean Ghika.
Despite a generally challenging year due to multiple lockdowns and travel disruptions, 2022 also witnessed successful online auctions for Bonhams, enabling the company to continue offering gems and jewellery to global audiences.
Bonhams Director of Jewellery and Head of Department in Asia Stewart Young explained that as a direct result, the auctioneer saw strong results with an average sell through rate of approximately 80 per cent for each sale made up of both local and international buyers.
Diamonds, rubies, sapphires and jadeite performed well at Bonhams’ auctions, led by luxury jewellery pieces from celebrated houses such as Cartier, Tiffany & Co, Van Cleef & Arpels. Apart from these, Paraiba tourmaline was also highly sought after. The company’s best sellers last year included a 63.01-carat Paraiba tourmaline and diamond ring, which sold for HK$1.38 million (around US$176,602).
