The Gübelin Gem Lab is celebrating 100 years of gemmological expertise with various initiatives, led by the launch of Gemtelligence – an innovative digital system that can identify gemstone origin and treatments.
Founded in 1923 by Eduard Gübelin Sr, the lab has grown to become one of the most trusted and technologically advanced gemmological institutions in the trade, providing cutting-edge scientific research, products and services across its laboratories in three continents. The company has operations in Hong Kong, Lucerne and New York.
“Gemtelligence makes use of the wealth of data we have collected on tens of thousands of gemstones over many years,” revealed Daniel Nyfeler, managing director of Gübelin Gem Lab. “They form the base to train a most sophisticated deep learning algorithm in a way that, until now, has never been mastered for coloured stones. This technology will be a key factor for us going forward into our next 100 years.”
The new technology will be unveiled in Tucson on February 3. Throughout 2023, Gübelin Gem Lab reports will also feature the company's 100th anniversary logo. Nyfeler further commented, “Moving into our second century in business, the Gübelin Gem Lab’s mission remains clear – helping enhance transparency in the gemstone industry.”
