Sotheby’s is shining the spotlight on artist-made jewellery pieces, including a non-fungible token (NFT) jewellery, at its inaugural “Art as Jewelry as Art” auction.
A first of its kind, the online event will run from September 24 through October 4, 2022, with viewing scheduled for the same period at Sotheby’s New York. It will present jewellery and adornment by some of the 20th century’s greatest artists such as Picasso and Salvador Dali.
“Some 150 thoughtfully chosen works of art, which can be worn as adornment or exhibited as part of a collection, will be presented,” revealed the auction house. “The auction will also showcase a variety of visionary contemporary artists plunging into the realm of wearable sculpture.”
Highlights of the event are pieces representing major art movements, from kineticism to surrealism. These include pendants by Picasso and earrings designed by Dalí alongside contemporary designs by Tom Otterness and Jean Boggio, among others.
The auction will also feature the “Ethereum Expedition” ring in 18-karat gold with emeralds designed by Francine Ballard of NFT gallery, Metagolden. The winning bidder will own the physical ring as well as an NFT – the ring’s digital version in the “metaverse.”
