A 39.34-carat Type IIB blue diamond recovered from Africa’s legendary Cullinan mine in April 2021 sold for US$40.18 million to a partnership between De Beers Group and Diacore, according to Petra Diamonds Ltd.
The diamond, which achieved a price per carat of US$1,021,357, is the latest addition to a sparkling roster of famous diamonds that originated from the mine.
Richard Duffy, CEO of Petra Diamonds, commented, “This sets a new milestone for Petra Ltd in achieving its highest price for a single stone and follows the sale of the 299-carat Type IIA white diamond in March this year and five blue diamonds comprising the Letlapa Tala Collection in November 2020.”
The Cullinan mine is known as the world’s most important source of blue diamonds and many other historic stones, including the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond, which was cut to form the 530-carat Great Star of Africa and the 317-carat Second Star of Africa – the two largest diamonds in the British Crown Jewels.
