Petra Diamonds Ltd recently unearthed a 39.34-carat Type IIB blue diamond of exceptional quality from the legendary Cullinan mine in South Africa.
According to the miner, the diamond excels in terms of colour and clarity. Petra Diamonds expects the diamond to be sold via a special tender.
This follows the recovery of five blue diamonds of top colour, clarity and size from Cullinan, which were named the Letlapa Tala Collection. This special suite of diamonds, weighing 85.6 carats in total, was jointly acquired by De Beers Group and Diacore for US$40.36 million in November 2020.
The Cullinan mine is known as the world’s most important source of blue diamonds and many other historic stones, including the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond, which was cut to form the 530-carat Great Star of Africa and the 317-carat Second Star of Africa – the two largest diamonds in the British Crown Jewels.
