If there is one design movement that has revolutionised the world of jewellery, that would be the sensibilities and modernist principles of the Art Deco period.
Characterised by geometric lines, clean structures and the use of an unusual mix of materials, Art Deco jewellery possesses a universal appeal that has stood the test of time. Diamonds are often mixed with carved coloured stones, including lapis lazuli, coral and jade for colour and contrast, and unconventional accents from rock crystals to plastic and enamel for added impact. Forms are more linear and symmetrical, an indication of the exciting and forward-looking mood that was pervading the Art Deco period.
Proof of this design movement’s enduring legacy was the sale of a Cartier Tutti Frutti bracelet at Sotheby’s New York online-only auction in April 2020. The bracelet, described by the auction house as “an icon of Art Deco jewellery design,” sold for US$1.34 million – making it the most expensive jewel ever sold in an online-only auction. The bracelet is set with old European and single-cut diamonds, with carved emeralds, rubies and sapphires. The piece is also highlighted with onyx and black enamel.
