Key trade shows in the gemstone and jewellery calendar have been postponed or cancelled due to the global spread of the novel coronavirus but a few events are pushing through.
JA New York is the latest to pull the plug on its spring show, originally scheduled for March 15 to 17 at the Javits Convention Center.
Organisers said recent developments regarding the Covid-19 outbreak such as the declaration of a state of emergency by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as well as travel restrictions “made it impossible for us to produce this edition of JA New York.”
The show’s summer and fall editions are taking place later this year as scheduled from August 9 to 12 and October 25 to 27, respectively.
Informa Markets’ Chennai Jewellery & Gem Fair 2020, to be held initially from March 20 to 22 at the Chennai Trade Centre in India, was also cancelled due to travel restrictions affecting industry participation.
JA New York’s co-located event, the three-day MJSA Expo 2020, earlier slated on March 15, was meanwhile postponed. The new dates will be announced soon, according to the organiser.
Other events have also been deferred to later dates.
The March edition of the Istanbul Jewelry Show will now run from June 18 to 21 at CNR Expo in Turkey, according to Informa Markets.
OROAREZZO 2020 in Italy was moved to June 19 to 22 from April 18 to 21. The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council also changed the show dates of the International Gem & Jewellery Show - Jaipur in India to July 18 to 20 from early April.
The 27th AMBERIF International Fair of Amber and Jewellery in Poland will now be held from August 26 to 29 instead of March 18 to 21, show organiser MTG SA Gdańsk International Fair Co revealed.
New fair dates for the following shows have also been announced: The International Jewelry + Watch Vietnam (April 15 to 19, 2021) and Jewels Basel in Switzerland (January 28 to 31, 2021).
The China International Gold, Jewellery & Gem Fair - Shenzhen in China, organised by Informa Markets, has been delayed until further notice.
Some major trade fairs however are still happening. At press time, events organiser Reed Exhibitions has announced that JCK Las Vegas will take place from June 2 to 5 while Luxury will open on May 31.
The novel coronavirus, which causes the Covid-19 disease, first emerged in Wuhan, China and has so far infected more than 117,000 people worldwide, with more than 4,000 deaths.
The disease’s outbreak has earlier forced the postponement of a number of key trade fairs, including the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show and the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show – both organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.
The fairs, held annually in March in two venues, have been rescheduled for May 18 to 21 at the AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE).
Informa Markets also moved its three-day SEASONS | Spring - Fashion Jewellery & Accessories Fair, initially slated in early March, to May 19 at the AWE.
Baselworld organisers have meanwhile cancelled the 2020 edition of the fair, which was supposed to take place from April 30 to May 5 in Switzerland. The show's new schedule is January 28 to February 2, 2021.
