The 19th International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) Congress gathered 370 delegates from 26 countries, including leading gemmologists, miners, retailers, gem dealers and jewellery designers in Bangkok.

Organisers said this year’s edition, held from October 12 to 15, saw the largest ever turnout in ICA’s more than 30-year history.

The ICA Congress, usually held every two years, enables industry experts to share their knowledge and insights with industry professionals and the media.

This year’s congress delved on pressing issues facing the industry such as responsible sourcing and challenges faced by artisanal and small-scale miners, as well as industrial mining.

“We are delighted to have seen the biggest ever participation by industry experts from around the world at this year’s Congress in Bangkok,” said Prida Tiasuwan, chairman of ICA Congress 2019. “The increasing diversity of the organisation is reflected in the largest ever presence of female delegates and speakers.”

ICA also announced plans to introduce a new membership status called “Accredited Ethical Member” through an application corresponding with the annual membership renewal. 

There were panel discussions on various topics including digital marketing, challenges faced by jewellery designers and major gem-trading countries in Asia during the congress. 

A session on responsible gemstone sourcing as well as the launch of ICA’s CSR initiative “Gems Keep Giving” were likewise held.
