An insightful discussion focusing on what draws younger buyers to precious metal jewellery and how it fits into their notions of personalisation and luxury will take place at Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong (JGW) on September 19.
The session, New Metal Age: Expanding Markets Through Gen Z Engagement, will also look at the exceptional allure of premium metals such as gold, platinum and osmium and their respective design and value proposition.
The expert panel will include Tai Wong, director, Global Innovation Development of Platinum Guild International; Scarlett Clauss, vice director of Osmium-Institut Germany; and renowned designer Alexander Laut, founder of his namesake brand Alexander Laut Co Ltd.
Wong has been with PGI China for more than 13 years, working with partners in the jewellery manufacturing and retail sectors. In his role, Wong is aiming to expand and strengthen the platinum jewellery sector through technological innovation and by developing market opportunities in new consumer segments.
He is also an active “creator” on PlatinumABC’s YouTube and LinkedIn channels that endeavor to share platinum knowledge and expertise from around the world.
Fascinated by crystalline osmium – recognised as the rarest precious metal – Clauss made a bold career shift to become one of the earliest team members working with osmium. Since 2019, she has led the international team ensuring secure and standardised trade worldwide.
Her passion for osmium inspired her to found Oslery (from osmium and jewellery), which began offering bespoke high-end jewellery and has since become the official partner of the Osmium Institute for all jewellery and luxury applications. In her dual role, Clauss travels globally to showcase osmium while also leading inlay cutting for manufacturers and training jewellery professionals.
Meanwhile, Moscow-born Laut emigrated to Hawaii in the early 1990s. He received a medical degree and tried many different professions before finding his real passion in jewellery making. He worked as a journalist, photographer and gallery owner but has always been interested in jewellery design and gemmology.
A turning point in his life was meeting Ronald Winston, son and heir of legendary jeweller Harry Winston. This extraordinary man, chemist, gemmologist and Japanese art connoisseur tipped the scale in Laut’s decision-making process and led him to become a jewellery designer. Ronald was also the inspiration behind Laut’s first jewellery collection.
Laut’s unique style is focused on large, rare natural stones, which he chooses himself. He established his premier atelier in Hawaii in 2003, marking the beginning of his journey into the world of fine jewellery.
