Pearls’ extraordinary status as sustainable and renewable gems was the focus of a panel discussion on September 17, 2024 on the sidelines of Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong 2024.
The “Beyond Precious: Pearl Farming and Environmental Stewardship” session explored the inherent sustainability of pearl farming and addressed the environmental challenges faced by pearl producers today.
The discussion also focused on the importance of pearl oysters as indicators of ocean health, underscoring the world’s understanding of the wellbeing of marine ecosystems.
Speakers were Hiroki Goto, general manager of K Mikimoto & Co Ltd and director of Japan Pearl Exporters’ Association (JPEA); Jacques Christophe Branellec, CEO of Jewelmer; Dr. Rebecca Koss, sustainability manager at Paspaley Pearling Company Pty Ltd; and Jens Knauer Phd, aquaculture and marine conservation consultant at the Autore Group.
The session also examined how sustainable pearl farming contributes to marine biodiversity protection and how this knowledge can be used to drive conservation efforts. It likewise looked at the potential economic and social benefits for pearl farming communities when sustainable practices are implemented, and explored whether the success stories and best practices from sustainable pearl farming can be replicated or adapted to other industries within the gem and jewellery sector.
Moderated by JNA Associate Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Ollie Quiniquini, the panel discussion took place from 3:15pm to 4:15pm at The Stage in Hall 9 of the AsiaWorld-Expo.
