The market for antique and vintage jewellery is enjoying solid growth, with demand and prices rising on the back of greater interest from collectors, jewellery lovers and even younger consumers.
According to Ioannis Alexandris, founder and CEO of Gemolithos, prices of rare antique and vintage jewellery, especially those by top jewellers Chaumet, Vever, Lalique and Fouquet, have been on the rise in recent years, while those by celebrated houses like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, have always enjoyed steadily high prices.
He noted that rare unique pieces with exceptional craftsmanship are always in high demand. Younger generations of consumers are also growing more appreciative of the rarity and beauty of vintage and antique jewellery.
“Fortunately, younger customers are increasingly discerning and have greater access to reliable information. Their willingness to research on possible purchases enables them to make informed decisions when buying good-quality vintage and antique jewellery,” Alexandris said.
The market is currently gravitating towards jewellery from the 1970s and 1980s due to their wearability and distinct aesthetic, he added.
Asia, led by China, is fuelling robust sales in the antique jewellery category, revealed the company official. “China remains strong in the fine antique jewellery segment while Japan and South Korea are quite promising,” added Alexandris.
New offerings
Gemolithos recently launched a new, one-of-a-kind jewellery line to complement its expansive collection of antique and period jewellery and to broaden its product offerings to clients.
The jewellery line is classified into two categories: One that places the gemstone as the core of the jewellery piece and the other, which shines the spotlight on the design and its execution. Also in its portfolio is an everyday jewellery line for customers on the lookout for modern and wearable pieces.
Gemolithos likewise expanded its product portfolio to offer natural fancy colour diamonds – a move well-received by its discerning and sophisticated private clients.
