Opulent tones and earth colours such as warm creams, decadent reds or mineral-based greens, to name a few, are likely to dominate design inspirations for upcoming autumn/winter collections, according to Pantone Color Institute experts.
Pantone Color Institute, the global authority on colour and provider of professional colour standards for the design industries, recently released the Pantone® Fashion Color Trend Report Autumn/Winter 2024/2025 edition for New York Fashion Week (NYFW). The trend forecasting and colour consultancy firm publishes the report for the fashion industry.
According to the institute, autumn/winter 2024/2025 colours are infused with an inherent richness and earthiness that highlight humanity’s deeper connection to nature.
“A compendium of warm tones derived from natural pigments, opulent mid-tones, accessible neutrals, and universal greens, they are characterised by a mix of elegance and practicality linked to conscious consumption and slowing trend cycles. Fun, but also functional, essential but not un-exciting, colours for autumn/winter 2024/2025, are straightforward, exuding a self-assured, no muss, no fuss demeanour,” the institute said.
This season’s report features the top 10 standout colours as well as the five new core classics that will most likely figure in fashion designers’ new autumn/winter collections.
Specifically, the colour palettes include Tomato Cream, which Pantone described as a “warm” and “toasty” hue; Scarlet Smile, “a glamorous and decadent” shade of red; Golden Palm, which exudes a rich mustard colour; Aventurine, a mineral-based bluish-green tone; the “vibrant” Red Orange; the “leafy green” Fern; the “deep, dark purple” of Italian Plum; Moonstruck, with a “shadowy grey” hue; Winter Sky, with “cooling blue” tones; and Lucent White.
The five new classics, meanwhile, include White Swan, with a “soft and downy white” hue; the “grounded brown” of Raw Umber; Dark Gull Gray, with a “solid and dense” grey colour; the deep, blue hue of Baritone Blue; and Buckthorn Brown, which has a vivid golden-brown hue.
London Fashion Week
Pantone also released its Fashion Colour Trend Report Autumn/Winter 2024/2025 edition for London Fashion Week (LFW).
The LFW Autumn/Winter 2024/2025 palette of potent and powerful colours “melds a fusion of retro influences with our desire to create new visions,” according to the institute.
“Blending wearability with desirability, this grouping of sophisticated mid-tones, nature-based hues, deep darks, and natural and honest neutrals signify a shift in mood with their strong trans-seasonal appeal and inherent statement of elegance and ease. Sleek and practical, yet visually engaging, they are dependable essentials that embrace an approach to dressing that is purer and simpler, but at the same time lends itself to creativity and playfully dramatic statements,” added Pantone.
Colours in the palette include Sunburn, “a burnished brown” hue; the “verdant green” of Rain Forest; the “luscious, prolific red” of Cherry Tomato; the “ethereal blue” of Starlight Blue; Pureed Pumpkin, with a hearty yet intense orange hue; the “lightly spiced, veiled yellow” of Misted Yellow; the “nutritious creamy white” of Almond Milk; the “defined purple” of Eggplant; Wave Ride, with a “tropical ocean blue” colour; and Storm Front, a “mid-toned grey” hue.
