South Sea pearls are among the most coveted types of pearls in the trade, thanks to their sophisticated allure, versatility and incomparable lustre. Demand for South Sea pearls remained strong even during challenging times – a testament to their enduring appeal.
Produced by the gold-lipped Pinctada Maxima oyster, South Sea pearls are highly sought after for their wide variety of sizes, shapes and colours. Their exceptionally large size of 9mm to 20mm and thick nacre averaging between 2mm and 4mm make them a standout choice among pearl traders and afficionados.
Their significant size and thick nacre, due to a long growth period, alongside their critical growing conditions all contribute to their market value, the Gemological Institute of America revealed.
These beloved pearls also come in warm, natural colours, which range from white to cream and silver to champagne and deep gold, according to Philippines-based South Sea pearl specialist Jewelmer.
Most of the leading producers of South Sea pearls are in Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
